REVOLUTIONIZING ENERGY STORAGE FOR HEAVY AND PRIMARY ENTERPRISES.
RESHAPE is a collaborative consortium at the University of Wisconsin–Madison uniting researchers, manufacturers, and technology leaders to accelerate breakthroughs in energy storage and sustainable power systems.
We focus on sectors where electrification is hardest and where we have a strategic advantage in technology and location—heavy-duty vehicles, industrial machinery, and high-demand infrastructure like data centers and microgrids—to deliver solutions that are not only clean, but also reliable, manufacturable, and domestically sourced.

MAJOR THEMES IN OUR WORK
MEDIUM- AND HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES MAKE UP 23% OF TRANSPORTATION EMISSIONS IN THE U.S.
But batteries and fuels designed for consumer vehicles cannot meet the continuous operation, energy density needs, and extreme forces of large-scale machines. RESHAPE is working to change that by creating new materials, chemistries, and design tools that strengthen U.S. manufacturing and supply chains while training the engineers who will lead the next industrial energy transition.
Located near global leaders in manufacturing, RESHAPE connects academia, industry, and government partners to transform research into real-world production. Our members gain access to advanced facilities, early research insights, a like-minded network, teaming for external funding opportunities, and a direct pathway to top engineering talent.

ADVANCED ENERGY STORAGE FOR HEAVY INDUSTRY
Developing batteries and hybrid systems optimized for high power, frequent cycling, and extreme environments in off-road, defense, and aviation applications.

SUSTAINABLE AND TRANSPORTABLE FUELS
Creating high-energy, recyclable liquid and metal-based fuels for portable and backup power—from construction sites to data centers.

DOMESTIC MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING
Designing next-generation electrolytes, catholytes, and electrodes derived from U.S. supply chains to enhance energy security and reduce import dependence.

INTELLIGENT TESTING AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Building autonomous safety labs, digital twins, and collaborative research projects that both accelerate innovation and train a new generation of skilled engineers.
WHY RESHAPE AT UW–MADISON?

01. END-TO-END CAPABILITY, UNDER ONE ROOF
From new chemistries and electrolytes to pack integration, abuse testing, and digital twins—we cover materials, to cells, systems, and validation. We’re tightly linked with WEMPEC (electric machines and power electronics) and DERC (engines/thermal) so you can solve electrification holistically, not piecemeal.
02. UNIVERSITY INVESTMENT IN ENERGY STORAGE
UW–Madison has committed $10M+ to energy storage—hiring more than eight faculty, building specialized facilities, and launching five new courses that align with industry needs. That means capacity to move fast, with people and equipment ready to go.

03. SUPPLY CHAIN ADVANTAGE
We’re in the Great Lakes manufacturing corridor, with proximity to suppliers, converters, and OEMs. It’s easier—and cheaper—to prototype, source, and scale here.
04. SHAPE PROFESSIONAL PATHWAYS
Tap top UW engineers with hands-on energy storage experience. Present in our seminar series. Leverage professional development discounts on InterPro courses. You get a recruiting pathway and influence training from day one.

05. LEVERAGE RESEARCH OUTCOMES
We structure rapid, targeted projects with quarterly visibility, access to advanced characterization, and freedom to operate on consortium work—plus co-develop proposals to unlock public dollars.
